Sure Cuts Quite a bit 2 (SCAL) is a software that can be used specifically with the Cricut Expression, Cricut Personal, Cricut Create, and Cricut Cake Machines. This software will help you create images and fonts without having to purchase all those expensive cartridges. In order to use this software you may should update your firmware in your machine. If that is critical this software will walk you thru the steps of how to try this totally free. I purchased my copy from ETSY.com and paid $24.99. It will also be purchased off of ebay and craftedge.com. Seeing as how many of the Cricut cartridges are not less than $25 each and you’re limited by what material is on the cartridge to what varieties of projects you can make this is an inexpensive and straightforward option. This isn’t a Cricut brand software so there may be the possibility of this voiding your 1 year warranty. However, if you’re like me and purchased your machine used then that will not be a difficulty. In this article I will go with you step by step on how to install and use this software.
Source Step 1- Installation
When you insert the disk into your computer a pop-up box will open telling you to run the set-up file and follow the prompts.
If your firmware on your Cricut machine needs to be updated SCAL will walk you through the technique of methods to update that totally free! When you turn your Cricut on it can say on the screen if it’s 1.0 or 1.2 for example; that is how you will now if it needs to be updated. Your entire process from update to put in was quarter-hour.
Step 2: Create
This software has many alternative options of how one can create. You’ll be able to change your font and even insert saved images. Simply use the pad on the screen that resembles your cricut keypad or your keyboard and start designing. You can also cut in layers if it’s worthwhile to do several colors. You can use downloaded fonts and other SVG images. There are also some generic images in the software for basic projects. It has some scrollwork, shapes, floral, and animals just to list a number of.
Step 3: Cutting
When you are done with your design you might want to prep your machine. Turn your machine on, apply your paper to your mat making sure it’s lined up properly, and insert the mat into the machine and push the load paper button on your Cricut machine. Ensure your pressure and depth are set properly depending on the type of material you’re using (if you are using vinyl the depth and pressure will must be set as deep as it could actually go). When you have got everything set you just push the “cut” button in your software. Your machine should start cutting. To unload the mat just push the unload paper button in your Cricut machine.
Step 4: Start Crafting
Now that you have endless possibilities at your fingertips you’ll be able to craft away. I recommend using the Cricut spatula to remove your items from the mat.

Hey I have a cricut personal running firmware 1.45v and I take advantage of SCAL 2?
I’ve only worked with version 2. I am not sure what difference there is between 1 and 2. Sorry I could not be more helpful.
Do it’s important to have version 1 or 2 of surecuts?
You possibly can only have it installed on 2 computers. Once the serial number has been used twice you possibly can not use it. You’ll have to buy an new one unfortunately.
I purchased my cricut create and bought the SCAL 8 years ago, I had it on my pc and a lap top, I got a new pc and in addition my lap top broke so now I downloaded my scal onto my new pc and its asking for the name and serial number which I typed in correctly but its stating that its not correct. How do I add it to my new computer?
I have the Cricut Expression and the SCAL2. I read in one of the comments above that you could possibly set it up to cut in layers using different colors. How is this done or where can I find the instructions.
Does SCAL, any version, work with the Expression 2?
I’ve only worked with SCAL2 and that i know it only works with the older machines. I have never worked with SCAL4 so I can’t attest to whether or not it is going to work with the expression. Sorry for not being much help. Once you discover out I; and some of the readers, would love to know the reply. Thanks for reading!
My apologies! called you Adam and realized Adams is your last name and you’re a she not a he! Will SCAL 4 work with expression? Or only SCAL v2 or older. If only SCAL v2 Are you aware of any Mac versions? Thanks!
Hey Adam can SCAL 4 be used with Cricut Expression or does it have to be SCAL 2? Want to make sure before I purchase the newest version. Thanks You!
This software can only be used with the older machines as it was discontinued several years ago. Thanks!
Can you utilize SCAL with a cricut explore air?
I just purchased a used Cricut Personal. After i try to cut using SCAL2 it says checking mat size and is not going to move beyond that. I am using the corre t firmware. Any suggestions?
The cricut expression is compatible with this software. The machine shall be hooked up to your computer and once the software is downloaded you may import svg files and cut along with your machine. The software gives you instructions on how to make use of it.
I still don’t know easy methods to import pictures from my computer to the cricut expression
The expression 2 just isn’t compatible with this software. That machine was created after this software was discontinued. To my knowledge there isn’t a software similar that can be utilized with the newer machine. There are other brands of die-cut machines that use similar software if at any point you are looking to switch away from Cricut. There isn’t any solution to downgrade your software that i know of.
I read the comments and now i’m confused. Can I exploit SCAL2 with my E2 ? My E2 is about 6 months old.
I got the Cricut Personal and its running Firmwart 1.45V and from my understanding I can only use SCAL2 with the older Firmware, can I downgrade?
This machine is simply compatible with the older machines and unfortunately can’t be used with the explorer. This software was discontinued before the explorer was released so it isn’t compatible.
Can I sue SCAL with Cricut Explore?
Hi, Hope you possibly can answer my question. I purchased my SCAL for my old expression machine this summer and have had no trouble getting both the software and the cutting to work. Last weekend, I updated to Windows 10 and now the software works, but the cutting hangs up. It starts after which just hangs and never cuts. I tried reinstalling the driver and likewise the software, but it surely still is not working. Any suggestions? Thanks for any information you may give me.
Joy, yes this software will work with SVG. Shelli, i just updated mine as well and it’s working fine.
My computer was just updated to Windows 10. Do you think SCAL2 program will work with it?
I just purchased a Cricut expressions 2 from a friend and I’m new to this.will my machine work with SVG files?
Sorry for the wait…You leave one cartridge in always just to make it function but it should cut based on what you send it from the pc.
This may be a dumb question, but how do you load the mat and not using a cartridge?
I honestly don’t know why. Mine has never done that. Now if I try to chop out cursive words I have to make use of the weld choice to make it one word and not individual letters. Undecided if that helps at all. Sorry.
I have cricut expression and sure cuts a lot2. I purchased my sure cuts too much about 8 years ago so it should work with my machine which is about the identical age. When i try to chop a stensil with sure cuts rather a lot I keep getting cut lines going across my stensil. Any idea why
The software does not work with many of the newer machines. It was discontinued so all of the newer equipment will not be compatible.
If I buy a new expression will it work with scal2? I’ve it now with my personal cricut but I would like the bigger one.

I bought SCAL2 to use with my Cricut Expression. I want to make rhinestone templates for my embroidery designs. I have a site that says the files are in SVG format and can be used with a die cutter. I am assuming this implies woth any brand of machine. Can I import the svg file through SCAL2 and send it to my Cricut Expression and cut away or do I need another machine?
Thanks for writing me back, just so confused on which one to purchase , after reading another post, wish cricut had a monogram one then I could just buy it, it’s the most well-liked ,thanks again
I don’t know of any software for the newer machines; cricut pretty much put a stop to it when people weren’t having to buy new cartridges for everything. There are other machines out their that use software like this; it just is dependent upon how much you are going to make use of it to make it worth your money.
I have a cricut expression 2 and I’m trying to get the monograming letters, is there any software you should buy to get them, or do I’ve to purchase another machine, if I have to get another machine which is the most effective machine, please help, do not know what to do

I used to be wanting to purchase this software on Etsy I am assuming its from the same seller you bought it from, My cricut expressions firm ware is 2.0 however it needs to be 2.1 or higher.. correct? I just wanted to ensure if I bought this system that It might upgrade the firmwware for me after i set it up. Thanks for the help!
This software is only compatible with the older machines and unfortunately shouldn’t be compatible with the expression 2 or the explorer. They have discontinued the production of this software and never made it for the newer generation cricuts but there are plenty of them still available on the market by individuals who stocked up on them before they were discontinued. (The link that I have listed on the Hub is a real copy and not a reproduction. It comes with a serial # which allows you to use this for up to two different computers.)
Can you use this with an expression 2?? Trying to find a way to chop Svg files without upgrading to an explore and paying more cash within 6 months of buying the expression 2!! Thanks
I do not think it’ll bridge anything like that; there is a weld option which will keep cursive items as one large piece. The best strategy to do what you are wanting is to get some transfer tape and use that to pull the die cut off the cutting mat and move it to your final location without disrupting the spacing of any items. They commonly use that when creating vinyl decals which will include more than one word or picture so as to maintain the right spacing. Transfer tape will not be an expensive item and can be purchased from eBay or etsy.
Hi, will purchasing scal give me the choice to create font stencils with bridges? So I don’t have to worry about trying so as to add in those pesky middles of a, o, p and so on? Desperate to seek out a solution for my cricut.
I’ve had SCAL for a very very long time and went through all of the firmware updates after i installed it to be used on my cricut expression long ago when i got it – Recently my cricut is saying it needs a brand new firmware update and that i haven’t done it because I am scared I won’t be able to use my SCAL anymore. I am unable to cut anything in my cricut craft room because it will not let me until I update. Any experience or advise on this could be so appreciated! Thanks so much!!
Thanks for the reply. Holy cow! I’ve just been looking at free svg images. I had no idea there have been so many. Wish had known before I bought a couple of cartridges. I could’ve saved myself money. Hoping to receive my SCAL software by Saturday.
I’m undecided but I have not had to try this. All I’ve done is save a picture from yahoo images for instance and convey up in SCAL. I haven’t had to transform anything. I feel that is referring more to an actual photograph image.
Hi, I’ve another question. I discovered a blog that talks about Sure Cuts Rather a lot and Cricut. The blogger states that I’ll have to download Inkscape if I would like to convert a JPEG image to an svg file. First of all, umm, I haven’t got a clue what this implies. Secondly, is that this true? Cindy
Hi, thanks a lot for replying to my question. I just finished up purchasing SCAL from etsy and cannot wait! I will be keeping my fingers crossed as I follow your tutorial.
I purchased my Cricut machine on Ebay in December of 2013 and ordered the SCAL software shortly after and installed it immediately. I did must update the operating software on my Cricut which the SCAL software walked me through on how to try this without cost. It may be done!!! The software is compatible with the Expression. I purchased my SCAL on etsy for $25.
Hi, I’m hoping you may answer my question about Cricut and SCAL. I purchased a used Cricut Expression( the first version) 3 weeks ago. My understanding is that I can not use the SCAL software with my Cricut on account of ProvoCraft disabling it’s use with their product. As I was reading your details about how to put in SCAL, I noticed the date shows 2014. Did you recently start using the software? I’d Like to not purchase cartridges because of their cost. I’ve purchased 4 but would have to spend a freaking fortune to get all of the photographs I like. I’ve asked other Cricut users online but the answer I’ve gotten is ” no, it can’t be done”. Looking forward to hearing from you.
